Through our Food & Nutrition focus area, we strive to reduce food insecurity and increase access to healthy food for low-income individuals and families in Santa Clara and Northern San Benito counties.
The Challenge:
- According to 2021 data, 7.5% of Santa Clara County residents and 8.3% of San Benito County residents are food insecure.
- Food is a key driver of health. There is a strong correlation between food insecurity and negative health outcomes, including increased rates of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
- Consistent access to healthy food helps prevent the development of negative health outcomes and helps people manage chronic conditions.

- Supporting food programs that remove barriers to healthy food access, including by increasing enrollment and participation in federal programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Investing in policies, practices, and systems that strengthen healthy food policies and the local food ecosystem.
